One of the most auspicious Hindu festivals, Diwali, is a festival of lights which is celebrated on the Amavasya (new moon) day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. This year, Diwali will be celebrated on November 4, 2021.

With Diwali just around the corner, people are bracing for the preparations to celebrate Lord Ram’s return.

People decorate their homes with bright lights, colorful rangolis, candles, lanterns and colorful earthen lamps. On this day, people also exchange wonderful gifts with their loved ones.

To start with home decorations, here are some easy and creative DIY decorating ideas that will not only save you time, but also give your home a classic touch.

Here are 6 easy and interesting DIY ideas for the home

– Hanging tealight candle / Washi tape Diwali tealight candles

Lights and candles are a must have for Diwali decorations as they give a vibrant ambiance to your home. However, tea lights can look a bit flat with their original gray metal holders. So, go to the washi tapes!

Make sure that the width of the washi tapes matches the media perfectly. All you have to do is pick the ribbons you want and wrap them around the tea light. You can go for something quirky or even give it a floral touch. Remember to use a variety of ribbons to make them more colorful.

And that’s all! Once done, you can use this beautiful decor in a rangoli or even as pendant lights.

– Crepe paper / toran paper cup garland for backdrop

Do not miss a beautiful Diwali decoration for the backdrop of your private bedroom or even the living room.

Take a bunch of paper cups and wrap them one by one with various decorative papers according to your taste. Once done, cut the bottom of the cups with a knife.

Now through these holes take out the bulbs for your Diwali decoration lights.

Likewise, you can make your own crepe paper toran which will definitely outlast the flower toran. You can also add golden bells at each end to add that extra sparkle and make it more festive.

– Recycle pickle jars

What could be better than decorating your home on Diwali with products lying around? Recycle and see how the smallest things around the house can give you a party vibe.

For this DIY, you just need some unused pickle jars that will replace the beautiful vases.

Use these pickle jars with marigold flowers and see the magic. You can even light mitti diyas around your decoration and put them on show at the entrance of your house.

– Wire lantern

Blow a balloon and prepare a mixture of glue and water. Carefully spread the glue paste onto the balloon. Then wrap the balloon with colored threads. During this whole process, you have to make sure that the balloon does not burst.

When dry, burst the balloon to obtain a perfectly formed ball of yarn. You can then put a group of lights inside this ball of yarn and hang it as a piece of decoration.

– Experiment with candles (floating candles / decorated with henna / candle inside a jar)

The water candle decoration on Diwali looks elegant and graceful. For this you need to get a glass bowl and fill it with water. Add rose petals to the water and place floating candles on them.

For another DIY trick with candles, you need to choose a few mason jars of different sizes and wrap them in laces, ribbons, or even colorful threads. Once done, place your candle inside the jar and see the magic.

Likewise, you can decorate your plain candles to make them look more lively and festive. Choose a larger size candle so that it is easy to draw your design with a henna cone. Once dry, use a paintbrush to coat your candle design with golden glitter using a mixture of glue and water.

– Lights in paper bag

Paper bag light fixtures are just as fascinating and beautiful as their names. They not only add sparkle to your Diwali decoration, but also give you a warm and peaceful ambiance.

To create them, choose brown paper bags and simply punch the paper with a decorative hole punch. Then put your candle inside. Place them by your pool or even on the balcony.

If you are passionate about interior design, you know that it can be an expensive hobby, and also not easy on the planet (transportation alone!). But getting creative at home doesn’t mean you have to fork out a ton of cash or even buy a new one. Of course, sometimes there is splurge on something you really love, but keeping your home new and fresh can be even more satisfying when you DIY. Whether you’re moving to a new location or just looking to redesign your space, we’ve got lasting tips from interior designer Rebecca Hay, Toronto-based Rebecca Hay Designs Inc. that are healthy for your home, budget, and your carbon. footprint.

Rebecca Hay Designs

Reduce, reuse, recycle

“This is possibly my favorite subject when it comes to sustainable design,” says Hay. “I love taking pre-loved existing pieces in a home and reusing them. It adds character and personality and can be completely one of a kind. The added bonus: you don’t create an extra carbon footprint. “

Hay suggests looking at what you have in your home that you could possibly breathe new life into, or perhaps search online thrift stores and neighborhood stores for previously loved pieces that have more character.

“Sometimes just moving a piece of furniture from one wall to another can just change and open up the space and make it feel new,” says Hay.

Pro tip: It’s all in the accessories! Look for items that speak to you to create a more polished look. Thrift stores are a great place to look for really inexpensive items or invest in high quality items in a nice store. Less is more when it comes to accessories!

A coat of paint goes a long way

Painting is an easy way to improve a space without spending a lot of money. To keep it durable, look for environmentally friendly, non-toxic paints and focus on an accent wall or mural to keep the budget down.

“Traditional paints that contain plastic create a plastic barrier on the walls when applied that trap air and lead to mold and other problems,” says Hay.

Find the color that’s right for you and search for wall art ideas on Instagram, Pinterest, and our own archives.

Pro tip: Paints labeled as “water-based” may simply mean that they are diluted, but still harmful to the environment. Ingredients like vinyl resins, synthetic dyes, petroleum-based petrochemicals, acrylics, formaldehyde, and ammonia can contribute to various health problems. If in doubt, consult the list of ingredients.

Add lasting finishing touches

“I’m not a fan of buying a bunch of inexpensive products from big box stores,” says Hay. “They’re often of poor quality and end up in landfill sooner than any of us would like to admit.”

Instead, try to focus on quality over quantity. Lots of pre-liked items are of higher quality than contemporary pieces.

“A lot of times you can find great quality furniture at a fraction of the cost of new. It’s immediately accessible and you don’t have to wait 24 weeks for a shipping container,” adds Hay.

Incorporating natural elements and designing with plants is also a great way to refresh a space without breaking the bank. They never go out of style.

Keep it timeless

“I’m not a huge fan of ultra-trendy design,” says Hay. “I would just use trends in small doses, like the wallpaper in the powder room, which you can change every few years because it’s fun and makes a statement. Or add a pillow, maybe some curtains, simple things that are easy to exchange. “

October may have just started, but anyone who already wants to start celebrating Halloween doesn’t need to look any further than Roger’s Gardens in Corona del Mar.

Employees at the 6.5-acre outdoor nursery and home and garden decorating hypermarket have created a huge seasonal boutique designed not only to showcase a range of ghoulish and whimsical holiday items for sale, but to to entertain, and perhaps slightly horrify, visitors from all walks of life.

The Cabinet of Curiosities guided tour features areas or scenes animated by characters who appeared to have walked, hindered or buzzing with classic Hollywood horror movies and in the exhibit hall.

Those looking for stylish Halloween expressions may be drawn to a nook, where a life-size Frankenstein bride stands among a spider web made of strung crystals and is surrounded by white and silver accents.

The Mummy’s Tomb area is further forward and includes skulls, skeletons, and even huge sarcophagi that patrons can buy and take home in mid-October, in order to keep the show intact for the public. visitor.

Meanwhile, curiosities, like a display case filled with spooky Victorian-era dolls or an arched hallway lined with skeletons, reminiscent of the Roman catacombs, create a spooky effect between the themed areas.

Nava Rezvan, who leads marketing efforts at Roger’s, says themed displays are more than just product placement, taking visitors on a whirlwind tour of the nearly endless ways they could decorate their own home for the holidays, bring a little life (or a little death) at a party or find the perfect gift.

“It’s almost like a theatrical retail experience,” Rezvan said. “We want to make it an experience for our customers. I think most people would say that’s why they come. “

The Halloween exhibit opened to the general public just before Labor Day weekend, but it took months to complete. Head Merchant Hedda Staines, who strives to find pieces that are desirable and trendy but also complement each year’s theme, said organizers are starting to plan a year or more in advance.

“Sometimes we have the next two Halloween planned,” Staines said. “We’ll start going to trade shows, we’ll talk to artists and people who make Halloween art, and the team make props. We are a well-oiled machine.

And since Roger’s is an outdoor plant nursery, suggestions for decorating gardens or finding clever ways to display flora seasonally are scattered throughout the exhibit. A neighboring section of “spooky plants” allows people to buy creeping vines and vegetation with tendrils or black flowers.

Although “Cabinet of Curiosities” pays homage to horror films of the 1930s and 1940s, it is largely inspired by the dark recesses of the mind of a certain Eric Cortina, creative director of Roger’s Gardens, who began to design small Halloween collections 20 years ago and never looked back.

On Thursday morning, Cortina found Cortina in another building, working hard on this year’s Christmas display.

“It’s about creating that sense of childhood wonder,” he said of the vacation rooms. “With Cabinet of Curiosities, the great thing is that everyone has participated and put their hands into it – everyone has a character.”

With the Christmas showcase underway, the Roger’s Gardens creative team are already starting to conjure up ideas for next year’s Halloween production. What will the theme be? Staines won’t be the only one to overthrow.

– If I told you, I should kill you, she said with a devilish smile.

Cabinet of Curiosities runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until October 31 at Roger’s Gardens, 2301 San Joaquin Hills Road, Corona del Mar.

There is nothing more relaxing than coming home to a spotless space. Nowadays, a lot of people are turning to minimalist decor because we live a busy lifestyle and it takes a lot of time and effort to keep our homes neat and tidy. This design style is all about less is more – less stuff and more space.

Clean lines, clean spaces and soft colors are all characteristics of minimalism. Simplicity is the key to keeping it to a minimum. Minimalism doesn’t have to be boring or all about neutrals, if implemented correctly it can appear warm, rich, and stylish. Here are some interior decorating ideas you could use to create a minimalist space.

Choose monochrome color schemes
Monochromatic color scheme refers to a unique color scheme created using different tones of that color. You can choose neutrals to encourage calm and muted blue hues that promise rest and relaxation, warm undertones of caramel and cream, or you can go for a classic all white.

Declutter surfaces

Decor

Take a tour of your home. Look at the furniture, portraits, objects, bills, keys, empty mugs, random items on the kitchen counter. To truly embrace the minimalist design, all of these elements need to be cleaned up. Start by listing the essentials, what can be eliminated, how to reduce storage, and start by organizing it accordingly.

Dare to be naked

Decor

Image: Shutterstock

There are no bare walls in Indian houses. The house does not look decorated if the walls are left bare. However, there is a slow push towards bare, clean walls. Keeping the walls bare can accentuate the design element of the room. Minimalist design is all about naked beauty, so don’t be afraid to get naked.

Use a different texture
Playing with different textures is key to minimalist decor, as a minimalist room can look bland and cold with fewer objects and subdued color tones. Fur throws, textured wallpaper, velvets, wooden floors can be used to make it more welcoming instead of being naked.

Flat surfaces and open spaces

Decor

Open spaces, clean lines and flat surfaces are considered an important element in a minimalist decor. Traditionally, Indian homes had closed kitchens to prevent smoke from escaping the house. However, millennials are now opting for an open kitchen with clean lines. The kitchen is compact with well-defined cabinets, drawers, and windows, which is pleasing to the eye.

Decorating your home can be an exciting yet tricky business at the same time, especially if your budget is tight. However, giving your home a new look doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor. With a few thoughtful interior decorating ideas, you can always create a beautiful home that is within your financial means.

Because it’s possible to stay on budget while still having a stylish home, this article has put together six practical and economical interior decorating ideas to get you started.

Fill the wall with tapestry

Wall decor can be expensive, but affordable options like tapestry are also available. The advantage of decorating with tapestries is that they are sufficient for an entire wall. They are often large and can give your home a dramatic yet refined look. Plus, they’re more affordable than most other types of wall decor, like artwork.

They’re easy to hang up, move around, and you don’t worry about them accidentally breaking when falling, bumped, or moving. You can use tapestries as a stand-alone wall decoration. You also don’t need to frame them, which cuts down on high costs and makes them a budget-friendly decorating option.

Incorporate an interesting wallpaper or mural

Another relatively simple, economical, and instant way to improve your home decor is by installing wallpaper. Much like a wall tapestry, wallpaper does not need additional decorations to stand out. Plus, you can use wallpaper in almost any room in the house. You can use it to visually emphasize the space behind the headboard of your bed or to give your bathroom a calming look.

Wallpapers come in different varieties, textures, designs and colors which make them easy to style and integrate into your existing decor. The skin and stick are remarkably easier to apply, although they do require a certain level of coordination for cleanliness. If you don’t want to go for wallpaper, consider hanging a mural. It’s a great textured decor for accent walls.

Shop your home and rearrange

Sometimes you don’t have to leave your house to buy decorative items. Moving things around, decluttering, and creating new arrangements could be the answer to your home decor. You might be surprised at how much changing the layout of the space or relocating existing decor can transform the look of your home. (1)

Swapping decorative items and furniture from one room to another is also an option. Swap your comfy bedroom chair for the one in your living room, and it’ll only cost you sweat and time. In addition, you might also have some decorative items that you bought or received as a gift and forgot about it.

Second hand shop

Second-hand stores are the engines when it comes to finding decorating ideas at a low price. First of all, hunting for hidden gems at affordable prices has a certain thrill that you just can’t get at high-end stores. Whether it’s the flea market, antique store, estate sales, or digital social media markets, these are places where you can always get great home decor items on a budget. (2)

And if you want to save more, wait for sales in second-hand shops. Plus, antiques can help you add personality to a space besides being durable decorative items. While selecting unique pieces for your home can take time, they always make a difference when you do.

Accents and lighting

Change your accents and your lighting

Consider replacing the doorknobs and handles on your cabinets in the kitchen, bathroom, and other storage areas around the house. Other seemingly small things like changing your seat covers and changing cushions can instantly update your space. You can also replace light fixtures and lampshades.

Good decor is only good when you can see it, and changing the lighting can make a huge difference to that effect. Update that old lampshade with spray paint, hang cylindrical pendants, and hide unsightly codes and wires from lamps. These are small, inexpensive, and effortless decorations that can dramatically change the look of your home.

A new coat of paint

There are a lot of things you can paint to make them look fresh and clean. Sometimes the eyes tire of looking at the same color for too long. Whether it’s the walls or an old decorative item, painting or repainting your home can brighten them up, and you won’t have to go broke for it. You can call family or friends and have fun painting.

While you’re at it, give your door a bright new look with a unique color, and don’t forget to paint the ceiling too. It is common for most people to leave the ceiling in the default color white, but another color like lavender can create a warm and luxurious atmosphere in the house. (3)

Change your lighting

Hang pluggable pendants in unexpected places

Pendant lights are gorgeous and help define a space, but can be tricky to set up on a whim. This plug-in version of George Oliver solves that problem with a loot hook so you can position it anywhere. Rather than placing the pendant lamp directly above a sofa or dining table, consider less obvious places, such as the corners of a room or near windows to create a reading or sleeping nook. relaxation.

Cast an atmospheric glow

Inexpensive spotlights work remarkably well for bathing your surroundings in soft tones that really change the mood of a room (and allow for great Instagram photos). The Balkwan spotlight is available in three different shades (sunset red, sky twilight and rainbow purple) and has a head that can be rotated 90 degrees for different lighting angles.

Partition a room with bookcases

When you can’t put up walls or hang sliding doors, a two-sided bookcase is a creative, sculptural way to visually divide a room and create separate areas (for eating, sleeping, studying).

Cleverly conceal with room screens

Modem wires and cables, air conditioners, old heaters … a chic panel display hides what you don’t want to see in a room so you can focus on the most attractive aspects. While you can find many cheaper options, the West Elm Cecilia Tiered Room Divider is well made and sturdy, so it holds firmly in place and comes in a selection of beautiful fabrics.

Create a focal point with oversized greenery

Large potted plants and trees are eye-catching, which can make a small room appear larger and larger. Nearly Natural’s traveler palms stand up to eight and a half feet tall (see the giant version here) and look very lifelike, to the point that guests will ask you how often you need to water your plants.

Dress up your floors

Resurfacing with peelable and adhesive tiles

Redoing your floors can be a huge investment and a headache, but these peel and stick floor tiles are a smart alternative. Ideal for small spaces, like a bathroom, laundry room or entryway, the tiles are thick enough to hold up well over time and are easy to cut and install, earning them over 1,000 five-star reviews on Amazon.

Stencil your floors

Of all the pandemic home projects that have populated Instagram, here is one that doesn’t require professional skills and can be done on a weekend: stenciling your tiles or floors adds a geometric accent that elevates your surroundings. This graphic design has been purchased over 75,000 times on Etsy and gets high marks for being versatile enough to use on everything from kitchen floors to stair surfaces.
